Many children have a difficult time producing neat and legible written work. Handwriting is a common educational and developmental concern for parents and teachers, as many children display difficulty producing written work efficiently and legibly. Handwriting difficulties impact other academic areas as handwriting is a part of literacy. These students may learn much less from assignments because they must focus on the writing mechanics instead of the content. A prerequisite to handwriting is that children must have developed good hand skills in order to produce efficient and legible handwriting. There are several important factors necessary to developing good hand skills such as wrist stability, development of hand arches, and separation of the hand into skilled and non-skilled and in-hand manipulation skills (Clark-AEA 11). Handwriting is a complex task and it involves many sensory-motor components, such as motor panning, proprioception, kinesthesis, and visual perception. Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion offers two handwriting programs to assist in the development of handwriting skills:
- The Helping Hands Program is designed for children ages 4-6 who need an extra boost in developing fine motor skills. Multi-sensory activities will be used to introduce and teach pre-handwriting skills. We prepare them for future demands of more complex fine-motor activities such as writing, cutting, typing, tying shoes, buttoning, using utensils or manipulating everyday objects. This 6 week class will lay the foundation for pre-writing abilities and the development of hand skills.
- The Getting It Write Program is geared for children ages 6-11 and incorporates activities that assist in improving skills such as motor planning, joint position, visual perception and fine motor coordination. We increase their handwriting speed and legibility. This 6 week class will focus on handwriting practice, pencil grip, and proper hand and paper positioning.
