SENSORY LEARNING PROGRAM

Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion is pleased to offer this innovative therapy.

History

For over a decade, Sensory Learning has helped children and adults address learning problems associated with development delays, acquired brain injury or disorders affecting sensory functions. The Sensory Learning Program relies on sensory perception as the foundation for our understanding of the world and the people around us. Academic abilities, behavior and emotional growth all rest upon essential sensorimotor organization.

Sensory Learning offers a drug-free approach to developing learning abilities; it's shown to be highly successful with sensory issues present across a wide spectrum of populations including:

  • Learning & Behavior Problems
  • Acquired Brain Injury
  • Sensory Integration Dysfunction
  • Developmental Delays
  • Autism/PDD
  • Birth Trauma/PTSD
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Learning Enhancement
Rationale

This program aids in stimulating multiple areas of the brain by engaging the visual, auditory and vestibular systems to enhance processing and sensory system connections. This provides for a controlled and repetitive sensory experience to facilitate neurological reorganization of the visual, auditory and vestibular systems. In addition, the program is intended to provide a sensory rich environment that assists to jump start development.

Theories of development suggest sensory processing must attain a level of organization called Supra-Modal Perception in which multiple streams of sensory information become a unified experience. Perception in not grounded in the separate domains of sight, sound and balance. During development, an individual learns to process patterns of sensations when the sensory sytems are exchanging information, giving the individual immediate perception of a unified experience. Many areas in the brain must respond at the same time to two or more ways of receiving information; by presenting multiple sensory inputs, supra-modal perception can be enhanced.

Program Overview

The Sensory Learning Program™ is a sensory immersion program, containing a combination of visual, auditory and vestibular treatment. The first consecutive 12 days consist of either one 1-hour or two 30-minute sessions at our Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion clinic. The next 18 days, the individual completes a home program using a portable light instrument to continue the light portion of the program for 20 minutes in the morning and evening.

An Overview of the Sensory Program

The participant lies supine on a motion table, in a darkeed room; they look up at a colored light, which is stationary, and follow it with their eyes. This creates an aerobic activity for their extrinsic eye muscles and strengthens the vestibular ocular reflex. The table movemnt is a slow, steady, circular pattern. The 12 session days will include the following six colors in the order listed:

  • Magenta
  • Ruby
  • Yed
  • Yellow/Green
  • Blue/Green
  • Violet
