LOW VISION SERVICES

Consider one of our most precious gifts-the gift of sight. Unfortunately, 1.7 million Americans over the age of 50 are affected by age related macular degeneration, which results in loss or distorted central vision.

Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion, a local nonprofit agency, is here to help. Specializing in vision rehabilitation services, Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion offers a variety of vision assistive devices for sale as well as low vision occupational therapy and optometry services-all designed to help the low vision patient live the best life possible.

Our Occupational Therapist, Optometrist and the only Scanning Laser Opthalmoscope in Iowa will greatly increase the ability of the client to better perform activities of daily living and remain in an independent living setting.

"The Scanning Laser Ophthalmosope" (SLO)

Through the generosity of the Hall-Perrine Foundation, our community has obtained a Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope, the first in Iowa. The SLO is a diagnostic tool that takes a picture of the retina in real time and locates where the vision loss exists. Because the brain often fills in "blank spots", it can make it difficult for low vision patients to accurately describe what they can or cannot see.

The SLO can map the actual vision loss without having to rely upon a patient's self report. This makes it much easier for the center's occupational therapist and optometrist to provide the best possible adaptive equipment, magnification, and training. It is an especially effective tool for macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy patients.
